Tall cobalt blue vase form decorated with ammonites, one-off piece by Julia Linstead

Julia’s one-off pieces are all hand blown and include swathes of colour that evoke the impression of movement and light within the glass.

This cobalt blue vase is decorated with a subtle pattern of ammonites. One layer of pattern was sandblasted onto a pre-blown bubble of glass as tiny motifs. When the bubble was taken back to the glass blowing studio it was re-heated dipped into several thick layers of clear glass and blown into this tapering vase form. During the second blowing the tiny motifs were stretched within the hot glass and swathes of rich cobalt blue were wrapped around the core. A second layer of ammonites were sandblasted onto the outside of the vase, after blowing, giving this piece the rhythm and flow of deep water.

The pattern is hand drawn and sandblasted into the surface of the glass, so each piece is completely unique.
